Solving the Yellow Cross (Step 5, starting the final layer)

You’ve already conquered the first two layers—nice work! Now, it’s time to turn your top into a shining yellow cross. Think of it as giving your cube a bright crown before the final push. And the best news? Every case naturally flows into the next:

In this stage, we will focus on positioning the yellow edge pieces on the top layer to start the final layer of the cube.

Steps to Create the Yellow Cross are :

If you're not at the stage where you have the 1st and 2nd layers complete then please go back one step and complete the 2nd layer.

The yellow face will appear in one of these 4 states:

No matter what state the Yellow side is in, the solution is fairly simple and they will follow on from each other. So if you have 'The Dot', follow the next step and then you'll have 'The Line', follow the next step and you'll have 'The L Shape', follow the next step and you'll be finished and have the Yellow Cross.

To solve 'The Dot' and make it into 'The Line'

You can have the cube with any side to the front, so long as Yellow stays on top and White stays on the bottom

You need to do the following algorith

  • f (Front two layers clockwise)
  • R U R' U' (Rightie)
  • f' (Front two layers anti-clockwise)

To solve 'The Line' and make it into 'The L Shape'

You need to make sure that the line runs horizontally, so either turn the top layer or turn the whole cube so that this is the case.

When the line runs horizontally, you can do the same solution as 'The Dot'

  • f (Front two layers clockwise)
  • R U R' U' (Rightie)
  • f' (Front two layers anti-clockwise)

To solve 'The L Shape' and make it into 'The Yellow Cross'

You need to make sure that the L Shape is on the front right as per where it starts in our demo below.

When the L Shape is in the front right of the top side, you can do the same solution as 'The Dot' and 'The Line' (I told you it was easy!)

  • f (Front two layers clockwise)
  • R U R' U' (Rightie)
  • f' (Front two layers anti-clockwise)

Don't worry about the yellow edge side colour not matching up with the side it's on, we'll fix that in the very last step.
